Zoological Type Notes --L

• Peters Checklist 3:122 lists the type as:

  Type, by monotypy, P. rufaxilla Nat. Libr., 5, pl. 24 = Peristera
  rufaxilla Selby (not of Richard and Bernard) = Columba jamaicensis Linné

  Peters reference here to volume "5" of the Nat. Libr. is not as helpful as it might be. There is a wild proliferation of volume numbers in the Natualist's Library, but this probably refers to volume V the Ornithological section.
• In the Richmond Index, Richmond sees the matter differently Richmond records three instances of Leptoptila, due to Bonaparte, Gloger, and Reichenbach. Those due to Bonaparte and Reichenbach are for pigeons and he notes they are emendations of Leptotila Swainson. The Gloger name is an emendation of Leptoptilos (a stork).
• Sherborn (p.3502) lists Leptoptila as an 1841 Strickland name for Leptotila Swainson, and I interpret that to indicate he (Sherborn) thought it was an emendation.
• Schulze et al. also list the Bonaparte and Gloger names as emendations.
• Colin Jones helpfully pointed out that Ridgway mentions that he interpreted Leptoptila to be an emendation.
• Therefore, I treat Leptoptila as an emendation and thus consider that taxa described in it do not neet the authority placed in parentheses.

  • Type by monotypy. Lophophorus refulgens Temminck = Phasianus impejanus Latham.
  • Type locality (Peters representation): "India." Peters 2:110.

• Lophura ignita (Shaw) 1798 Nat.Misc. 9 pl.321,text
  • Type by monotypy. Phasianus ignitus Shaw
  • Type locality (Peters representation): "Java, error = Borneo." Peters 2:117.

• Lagopus lagopus (Linnaeus) 1758 Syst.Nat.ed.10 p.159
  • Type by tautonomy, Lagopus Brisson = Tetrao lagopus Linnaeus.
  • Type locality: "in Europae alpinus = Swedish Lapland.)" AOU CL 7ed. p.119.

  • Type by monotypy. Lybius guifsobalito Hermann
  • Type locality (Peters representation): "Ethiopia." Peters 2:57.

• Lipaugus vociferans (Wied-Neuwied) 1820 ReiseBrasil. 1 p.242
  • Type by subsequent designation. Muscicapa plumbea Licht[enstein] = Muscicapa vociferans Wied. (Gray,GR 1840 ListGen.Birds p.29).
  • Type locality (Peters representation): "Fizenda Pindoba, north of Caravellos, Bahia, Brazil." Peters 8:295.
