Catalogues of Natural History (post 1850) issued by the British Museum."
13:308-312 publishes dates of publication that are at variance
with those published by Mathews.
- Mathews in his 1925 Bibliography of the Birds of Australia pp.25-6 gives
dates and refers in text to the "... Ascertained date when secured." Presumably
this date is that which is listed in the table as "Actual Date". (Though one
must note that in the text just above he states "The exact dates of publication
are not yet know." So in just three lines we have "exact dates", "Ascertained
dates" (very peculiar that it is capitalized), and "Acutal Date." Much of Mathews'
writing and work appears to me to have suffered mightily from having been edited by himself.

"Rex Banks has passed me your query about the date of
publication of volume 6 of the Catalogue of Birds in the
British Museum."
"I have looked at all our copies here but the only clue
I can find is that one copy was accessioned on 16th
January 1882. With Sharpe's Introduction dated 26th
December it's therefore somewhere between those two
dates."
- Regarding vol.XX, Zimmer (p.97) notes (quotes are his)
It was completed in December last, and is dated 1891, though it was not
actually accessible to the public until the middle of last March" (Ibis, July 1892).
(Thanks to James Jobling via Edward Dickinson for bringing this to my
attention). Interpretation here is problematic, and either 1891 or 1892 may be correct.
It is not impossible that it may have had limited, internal distribution.
My initial interpretation was that this date should be changed to 1892, thinking
that a speculative scenario was necessary to consider the work as
"published" in 1891. However, on reflection I consider that the
information in the Ibis speaks not to "publication" but to "accessib[ility]
to the public." As is often the case I get the impression that either the
Code is poorly written, or my intellect is not sufficient to the task of
its interpretation. I suppose a combination of the two is the most likely.

- Regarding the date of publication, Roy McDiarmid writes
(2005.01.11)
In 1926, C. Davies Sherborn, Ann Mag Nat Hist ser. 9, vol.
17:271-272 published a brief note titled: Dates of Publication of
Early Catalogues of Natural History issued by the British Museum. In that
work Sherborn attributes the Catal. Spec. and Drawings .... by Hodgson to
G. R. Gray, 1846 with the bracketed date [9 January 1847]. In the text he
states that 'Information supplied from the Records by permission of the
Trustees of the British Museum.' Further, he stated that many difficulties
have arisen in question of priority and that it is impossible to recover the
exact date they were offered for public sale. He continues that " ... we
must be contented to recover the exact day on which they were 'laid on the
table' of the Trustees, a preliminary to the issue to the public.' He
notes that these are the dates he used in the Index Animalium.

This remarkably rare work is discussed by C. Davies Sherborn and Charles W. Richmond
in the Smithson Miscellaneous Collections 47:332-347, 1905.
Only one copy of the work is known to exist -- in the Linnean collection.
The evidence developed by Richmond demonstrates that Peter Simon Pallas (age 23 at the time)
was the author of the names and descriptions in the Adumbratinunculae.

While a perhaps a minor point, I have been confused by the inconsistency of
style through the volumes of the Checklist.
When the publishing date (the date of
taxonomic availability) differs from the date printed on the work in question
both are usually listed in the citation.
Below I have a table presenting, by volume,
the use of (+) or abscence of (-) parentheses around dates of publication (Pub)
or the year printed on the work in question (Printed).

While the inconsistency in approach is, in my view, inexcusable, I offer some comments
in support of the approach that most workers appear to misinterpret.
When the date-published differs from the imprint date, the date-of-publication is
supplied information. It is a general and reasonable custom to include information
that is added by the author in parentheses (or more often brackets [ ]). I think
this may be the rationale that was employed in some, but not all volumes.
Additional notes:
Vol. IX: seems to be particularly lax in terms
of editorial consistency. An example (noted by Dickinson) comes from contrasting
Coracina novaehollandiae nipalensis (p.170) and Coracina melaschitos
(p.193). Delacour's section on Aegithina also has a number of obvious errors (see
A. v. thapsina).

- The dates on the signatures would appear to differ from the dates of availability.
Of my two copies of parts of this work, the first is listed as "Sectio Prima" on
the cover, which appears to be a wrapper, pasted on the front board to form a cover.
This bound set of signatures ends on page 272, lending some weight to the speculation
by CW Richmond and others that the first part ended on page 272. (The ending of the
first part is not known for sure.)
- I learn from Steven Gregory, that there are (at least) two "states" of publication
of the first volume. In the first state, the genus group name Milvus contains a typgraphic
error and is rendered Mllvus (double "l" instead of "il"). Apprently this was corrected.
Neither of my copies contain this error.
- The CWR unpublished notes on Dates of Publication include notes that
- "Première partie" rec'd by Paris Acad., June 24, 1850.
This is also called (in list of books rec'd.) "Sectio
prima"; 1 vol. in 8o.
- "le seconde partie" [of vol. 1] was presented to the Paris Acad. by Bp.
Feb. 3, 1851
- There has been controversy, confusion, and uncertainty regarding
how the last "portion" of this work should be dated. 1850 or 1851.
In their address to this problem Browning & Monroe Arch.Nat.Hist.
1991 18(3):382 state:
The date 10 November 1850 is printed on page 537 of the last signature.
The year cited for several taxa, for example Arremonops conirostris
Bonaparte and other taxa (See A.O.U., 1983: 670, 682, 698, etc.), should
be 1850 rather than 1851.
This suggests to me that Browning & Monroe are basing their date of the
last portion (at least p.465-543, and possibly p.401-543) on
a signature date, which I would regard as unsatisfactory as a
method of establishing a date of publication.
- What to do? In my view, a reasonable argument would be to place
the emphasis on the date specified (i.e. the date imprinted on the
title page), 1850 for vol. I. First, clearly some material was in fact
published in 1850. For all material from Volume I, then 1850 should be
accepted unless one can establish proof of delay into 1851 for
publication of part of the material. Notification of receipt by the
Paris Academy of the last part of vol. I on Feb. 3 1851 is evidence for,
but certainly not proof of delay in publication. Of note in this regard, is that quite clearly
the notification of receipt by the Paris Academy appears to have been
at least several weeks later than the actual time of publication. This
appears to be demonstrated by the Paris Academy noticing the receipt of some
materail 6 days (virtually a week) after it's receipt was noted
in Philadelphia. So the Paris Academy notification in this instance
appears to have occured an absolute minimum of two weeks after the
actual date of publication, and more likely it was three, 4, or more weeks
delay.
- The dates of portions of the last part of the work are of some controversy, interest
and importance. Zimmer discusses this, and indicates support for the understanding
that the final portion was distributed (privately) in parts -- though the completed version
of the final portion was not widely available until 1857. The exact dates of avialability
of the various signatures of this last portion are lost to us, but some indication
of the time of their availability comes from notices given in ornithological journals.
The most useful are those in the Journal für Ornithology, and the dates of discussion there
can, and have been taken to represent the dates of the portions of the work.

Murray Bruce has examined the question of these dates further and in some detail.
He determines that the last part of the work (from pp. 141-162)
was all that was issued in 1853. Murray kindly forwarded the results
of his work on this problem, and I include his discussion here:
- "I discussed this publication [Contrib.Orn.] earlier on an owl name.
I then pointed out that the final volume of Jardine's series, Contr. Orn.,
was intended for 1852 but was delayed until 1853 (recall I also pointed out
earlier that I had copies of title pages for both 1852 and 1853).
The series, begun in 1848, was intended to cover each year with new material
and reviewing some activities of the year in question.
The series was under the influence of Jardine's son-in-law, Hugh Strickland,
who had been an active observer and critic of ornithological developments (see my foreward).
His accidental death in 1853 ended the series - Jardine (and his daughter)
never completely recovered from this tragedy.
However, after my earlier discussion on the change of date with the owl name (cf. Tyto glaucops),
I also intended to look further into the matter[, and ...] did so, and I think I have finally sorted
out the problem - and I was wrong with the owl name - yes, it is 1852!
What tends to be overlooked is that the 'Contributions' were published in parts,
but apparently no details have been found on this aspect of the publication.
For example, in the 1852 vol. on p.134 is a letter dated Oct. 1852 relating to a point discussed on p.78
of the same volume. It doesn't seem to be an issue from a nomenclatural point of view
(but I haven't had time to check this). In the case of the final volume the confusion
seems to stem from the fact that all but the final part came out in 1852.
What page marks the beginning of the final part from 1853?
I have found the answer. Hartlaub's series of reviews of the literature covering each year from 1846
to 1871 solves the problem. I was reminded of this work when I used one of his reviews for the foreward.
In the coverage of 1853 literature he mentioned that he received the final part and that the tragic death
of Strickland marked the end of the series. By checking his listings under regions and families for the
volume in his 1852 and 1853 reviews, I found that the final part contained only two articles on pp.141-162.
The first is a report on a collection of birds from SW Africa by Strickland and Sclater
(the new birds but one named by Strickland alone); the second a brief note translating the description of a
new hornbill named by Sundevall.
As I have a copy of the volume, I went through the relevant text to see what was done in Peters and found this:

Apart from wondering why Hartlaub was overlooked (although further checking may reveal others had followed him)
it was obviously convenient to cite the whole volume as 1852, as with the previous ones for their respective years.
From the above and your query on names from Peters 7:24,39, it would appear that between vols 5 & 6 Peters
was led to believe the 1852 volume was 1853 and changed the citations accordingly. The three citations to vol.9
are to lark names and while listed inconsistently, they all indicate 1853. I assume this is because the family
account was originally done by Peters and the final version suggests editorial 'adjustments' to Peters's MS.
It would seem that either Peters himself or someone else he knew misinterpreted the publication of the whole
volume as 1853. However it happened, Peters used 1853 consistently in the remainder of the series he prepared
himself. Looking at a subsequent checklist for southern Africa, in this case the first one by Clancey in the 1960s,
he has the lark names as 1852, presumably correcting 'errors' in Peters, although the woodpecker from vol.6 got
through as 1853.
Anyhow, the end result is that the names you queried should be 1852, with 1853 only applying to the names
indicated above. While some have already been covered in HBW, note those where this can be corrected.
- Additional data of interest is found in CWR's unpublished notes on dates of publication. A card there
documents data he extracted 'From a cover of a "separate" of Sclater's "Synopsis of Galbulidae"
1853.' The data are as follows:
